About Fresh Hair

Fresh Hair is a full service salon in the warm neighborly community of Jamaica Plain.  We offer haircare, skincare, nailcare, cosmetics, and spray tanning.  Our services are for everybody:  women, men and children.  Our job is to make you look and feel great!

Fresh Hair makes everything easy for you. The salon is a comfortable place to visit, with wooden floors, two rocking chairs and showings by local artists. You’ll find an ease and friendliness of communication that starts with the receptionist and follows through with every single staff member.

Our hours and location are convenient, and the products we use and sell are "green" and natural.  Each service provider is highly skilled.  We stand by our work.

Salon history

Fresh Hair began in 1982 when Joy Silverstein and Marie Doucette left Newbury Street to be in their own neighborhood and do the work they loved in an atmosphere they, and you, would enjoy. The two-chair salon quickly became four chairs. Then in 1986 the little grocery on the corner had a fire and went out of business. Fresh Hair grew into that space, adding more styling areas, a retail area, a cosmetics counter, a facial room, a real reception desk and an office. Luci Mansfield was Salon Coordinator for many years and put together the Gift Center in 1996. In 1998, Marie moved home to Florida, and Joy became sole owner. The building façade was renovated in 1999.  For everyone’s comfort and aesthetic enjoyment the interior expanded in 2004 to make room for Spray Tanning, a separate hair-drying area, a second bathroom and a center-access shampoo sink. In 2005 a pedicure chaise was added.

With this web site the salon continues to reach into the new millennium.

Salon philosophy

We strive to always do the right thing, for the client, for employees and for the environment.

• We use and sell natural ingredient hair and skin care products.
• We filter our water.
• We recycle cardboard and styrofoam as well as plastic, glass and paper. 
• We have solar panels for our hot water - Click here to see our award from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts!
• Local artists use our walls for showings of paintings, drawings, watercolors, and photographs.
• We give to the community with gift certificates for raffles. Staff members are involved in the local business association called JP BAPA,  the Eliot School of Fine and Applied Arts, and our community theatre The Footlight Club.

We are a neighborhood salon, and proud of it.
